Education and Curriculum
We are guided at St Nics' by the contemporary theories and research informed by the Reggio Emilia approach recognising the value of the environment as a ‘third teacher’. We see that behind educators and families, physical spaces hold the potential to influence what and how children learn. At St Nics' careful planning and decisions about our environments are designed to foster discovery, in the goal to prepare children for school and teach children Christian values.
School readiness is about preparing your child for formal schooling. This often includes helping children to build social relationships with peers, following routines and being independent with their self help skills. We also run a thorough paper-based program with significant evidence of children’s learning for the purpose of tracking development. All children leave with a special St Nics’ folder full of their learning and artwork.
Our school readiness program consists of three pillars:
Social and emotional readiness
Being able to be away from parents or main caregivers for a school day’s worth of time
Being able to relate to different personalities in peers and teachers
Being able to seek help when they need it
Being able to verbalise their needs and desires
The development of resilience and independence
Socially acceptable behaviour
Taking turns and sharing
Practical and logistical readiness
Being able to sit and listen during group times
Being able to concentrate on a task and finish it
Being able to follow complex instructions
Being able to know where their possessions belong and take responsibility for them
Being able to follow routines
Evidence of learning
Reading and writing first and last name
Reading or recognising all letters in the alphabet (for those capable they will be encouraged to write all letters in the alphabet)
Writing up to ten

Our Smartie Room
The Smartie Room is our dedicated 2 - 3 year old space. Lucena, Regina and Annie do the bulk of the teaching in this room and keep the program interesting and educationally appropriate for the younger ones. The Smartie Room is our bigger classroom, flooded with light and leading out to the garden.
Our Cookie Room
The Cookie Room is our 'Big Kids' space with our School Ready children, aged mostly 4 - 5. Natalie, Shannon and Bri are our teachers in this room and are passionate about preparing our Preschoolers for the rest of their educational lives. The Cookie Room also has some lovely, relaxing ocean views!
